My love for Southern Living magazine runs very deep. It was first published in 1966 and was the only magazine my Mom had a subscription to, for her whole married life in fact. I remember watching and waiting for the mail to be delivered during the summer so I could get my hands on it first, before my four sisters or even my Mom could read it. I'll never forget walking barefoot through a sea of sandspurs so strategically that it felt like walking through a minefield in our front yard, a walk I'd gladly take to get the coveted first read.
We were planning and researching where to take a quick getaway trip with the hubs in the fall, when I saw a recent cover of the 2024 Southern Living Idea House! The Kiawah River community in South Carolina rang just the right bell! I'll post photos once we do visit, but in the meantime, since I haven't done a house tour of a favorite property up for sale recently #longlivehouseinthehood, I thought I'd share a preview of it today. So come along with me for a tour of this beautiful idea home in the Lowcountry that celebrates live oak trees and the richness of color for the interior.
Southern Living Idea House 2024
Don't you just swoon at this long grand entrance?! Plus that sweet little pup waiting for you on that porch. The crushed oyster pathway reminds me a lot of the driveways around our house in my childhood. The way that tires roll over them and have a very specific crackle - you knew company was coming.
You don't often see purple used in interiors, but the use of lavenders, violets, and aubergine in this living room is blissfully inspired. It's more of a dusty purple tone overall, which reads more sophisticated than garish, which one might assume about a purple living room.
I also love the big Kelly fern in the fireplace - that's something my Mom would do, absolutely. And I also love the understated gold light fixture, rather than my go-to large, bold chandelier.
This warm brown-purple tone echoes the living room, but has its moment here in this beverage bar area with that fun backsplash!
Same thing in this powder bath - elevated Southern charm with a color drench that just hugs you tight when you walk in.
Big fan of those refrigerator handles - very cool and fluid, but they still work in this context. Note the same slight curvature repeated in the window treatments. The subtle colors in the circular tiled backsplash is just enough here - there are so many jewel box moments throughout the home, so it is nice that the kitchen is the palette cleanser of the house, so to speak.
When you walk into this dining room and see the view beyond of the waterway, it's just breathtaking and quintessentially Lowcountry. Plus that glimmer of wallpaper at the top of the image just gets me giddy!
With our own window replacement project finally done, it was lovely to see that this house used Marvin windows and doors as well!
The tile game in this house is so GOOD Y'ALL! All the nooks and special moments hit you with a punch, and you know I love a good blue floral print, especially one so unique.
I can't help but think these designers had "monochromatic look, but new colors" on their vision board for this house. Each space plays so well with the different tones of a color and incorporates them into varying sizes of prints as well.
This house definitely needs a screened-in porch with all of that standing water just outside. That fan will get plenty of use too - I imagine sitting out here with some iced sweet tea on a summer morning before it gets too humid.
I am so in love with the bold choice to do a full wrap wallpaper from walls to ceiling next to the same print in window treatments as drapes and shades. That is not always going to work out, but this room speaks to the art of subtlety! The print is soft, the color isn't overwhelming, and there's plenty of natural light to flood the room and make it feel airy.
The pillows on the bed bring in that small piece of lavender from the living room again, and the blue tone of that nightstand is gorgeous as well. I love it all.
This room is perfect, and look at that pup - just precious. I imagine his name is Buddy. If he were mine, that'd be his name for sure. Maybe it's me missing my twins off at school, but the double beds with those plaid headboards and all the subtle touches of blue - chef's kiss!
I'm so looking forward to seeing this in person soon! Stay tuned too for an updated post with more detailed pics. I can't wait! BTW It's open through the end of December, so purchase your tickets to tour soon if you're a fellow design lover :) Maybe I'll see you there ;)
