Most of us have closets full of clothing trends that we may regret, but this exists in home decor/design as well - in possibly more of a "permanent regret" territory because of how costly it can be to change your mind when it comes to big ticket investments for your home! Scroll through to read our top six design trends that we really hope don't find the light of day again.

Design Trends That We Hope Will Never Come Back

Gray Everywhere

Gray has had one of the strongest chokeholds on the masses that I've seen in all of my years buying and designing homes. Since the early 2000s, flippers and homeowners alike have relied heavily on grays in flooring, paint color, fabrics, leather, artwork - the list is endless.

There's just no joy in most gray colorways - and we want to be creating joyful spaces. Can we all agree to retire the cool gray look now? Pretty please?

White Everywhere

As I drive around towns whether either here in Houston or around this beautiful country, there's another trend that I think needs to go away... and quickly. I wish people would stop painting the exterior of their house a true bright white paired with black metal windows. It's a harsh mix in most circumstances and not a blanket combo that should be used on every house.

The same goes for an all white space or repainting all the interior walls in a bright white without updating anything else. I have sadly left many a paint consultation warning against an all white paint renovation, explaining that given the existing finishes and furniture, it will look like the walls have been primed and not completed, especially when its the wrong white. As we've discussed before on this blog, not every white undertone paint is the same and undertones matter. Color is your friend, I promise!

Shag Carpet

I don't know who decided that carpet in a bathroom was a ever good idea (and then shag carpet on top of that!!), but that is something that definitely needs to stay in the 70s and never return. That goes for any form - carpet doilies around the toilet, wall-to-wall carpet, anything that can easily hide mold, dust and other unseemly things. No. Just No.

Heavy Textures on Walls & Ceilings

Popcorn ceilings are a glaring feature of an outdated home - full stop! We really must have been obsessed with texture, both in tactile and visual senses, back in the day. Heavy orange peel textures on walls are another date stamp on a home.

Glass Blocks

I can't believe I'm typing this but glass blocks are attempting a comeback with bright grout colors and metal inlays. I know, say it isn't so but I'm seeing it y'all and I really hope this trend stays in the past.

Accent Walls

People ask me all the time about accent walls, but I have to say I'm just not the girl for you if you're set on doing an accent wall. I personally think it looks choppy, like the painter stopped early for the day and never came back or the budget ran out. And that goes for wallpaper as well - my only exception might be a bar area or a nook that has clear boundaries. I say go big or go home - do every wall, and maybe even the ceiling too!
