Last week, we took a deep dive into the unseen differences between retail quality and custom quality furniture. While we absolutely believe its important to invest in quality pieces, especially seating, we sometimes have to find ways to save in other categories of a design project in order to stay within our client's approved investment amount. Today, we're sharing some seemingly obvious ways to save on home decor, but there might be a few surprises from me that you weren't expecting based on my personal experience in my own home. Scroll through and have a look!

Where to Save on Home Decor in Your Home

Towels

I have to admit - I got suckered into buying more expensive towels myself last year because of a few targeted ads, and let me tell y'all, - NOT WORTH IT. I went back to my tried and true less expensive towels, and even my special skin is a happy camper. #noflares With the other humans in your house, you know the towels get their fair share of wear, and expensive towels don't provide any added value to justify that extra cost in my humble opinion.

Another little tip for homes with teenagers like mine, beware of colored towels...they will discolor should your teens being using acne preventing washes and topical meds.

I'd also add that super thick towels can take longer to wash and dry and I don't know about you, but I'm all about less laundry or at least, less time doing laundry. You may not think so, but don't be afraid to try a Target or Costco towel - it might just change your life!

Sheets

This one might be controversial, but here's a secret: I've had sheets from Costco and Target that I just love. I'd even go so far as to say that I love them just as much, if not more, as really high thread-count designer sheets. I know, shocking, right? If you find yourself having to retire sheets often with kids and spouses or pets, I say going the economical route is just fine!

Shelf Decor/Accent Pieces

I have no shame in saying that I frequent a few local retail stores for ceramics, vases, wall art, and other small items to use for styling shelves or add some jazz to a table or console, depending on the client's budget once the major pieces of a design project are selected and ordered. I've used and seen interesting pieces at little local boutiques as well as places like Zara Home, CB2, H&M Home, and even Target.

I've been an avid antiquer since I was a teenager and love looking in person on our travels near and far and of course while in Round Top and High Point. If you're wanting to find something more unique and support a small business or creative, Etsy is a great place to find a variety of things like pendants, dinnerware, vases, sculptures, and more! There are a variety of price points as well.

If you happen to live in an artsy place, take a walk downtown and stop into local galleries or consignment shops along the way to see if you can find some hidden treasure too. Here in Houston, there are art galleries galore in the Montrose and Heights areas like Silver Street Studios. Also be on the lookout for local art festivals throughout the year including art exhibitions at local colleges...you never know what you'll find or what new artist you may discover.

Fresh Flowers

Trader Joe's has an amazing assortment of flowers throughout the year that are more seasonal. As much as I love a great floral arrangement, this is a way to have beautiful blooms for a fraction of the price, especially if you like arranging them yourself.

Trendy Decor

I've always been one to say that if you like a piece, you should buy it, regardless of whether it's on trend or not. Trends come and go - so rather than following a crowd, buy what you like, and because you are the glue of your home, it will feel like you and make you smile every day.

Plus, if you do like a specific trend, especially one with a hefty price tag, you could wait until those pieces end up in thrift stores in about a year (yes, it only takes that much time), and save those dollars in that way!

Bottom line: Buy what you love and it will never go out of style.
